Olivia is completing her Masters in Geography with a specialization in Data Science, under the supervision of Dr. Stephan Gruber at Carleton University. Her project centers on characterizing permafrost thaw across Canada using ground temperature data and is part of Theme 2 (Monitoring of permafrost change) of NSERC PermafrostNet. It is Olivia’s hope that her research will strengthen the permafrost climate services available to decision-makers.
During her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at the University of Ottawa, Olivia became interested in permafrost. As she explored how this largely hidden phenomenon shapes both human and natural landscapes, she became fascinated with the topic, leading her to pursue a master’s in the field. Having focused much of her studies on natural sciences, Olivia joined NSERC Create Leap to develop an interdisciplinary perspective on permafrost research and northern issues.
